How to choose a pram

If this is your first time looking at prams, it’s hard to know where to begin. There are so many options, and so many price points, and it can be tricky to know exactly what features are the most important. To get started, check out our dedicated guide to choosing the right pram, or check out the quick tips below.

Consider your lifestyle

You won’t want to adjust your life around your pram, so planning ahead for a pram that suits your lifestyle will save a lot of hassle down the track.

Key questions to think about include

  • Will you only use your pram on sealed surfaces? If you mainly walk on smooth footpaths or at the shops, a 4-wheel full-size pram would do the job nicely. But if you’re going to be heading off-road a bit, a 3-wheel pram with good suspension might be a better option.
  • Do you need to manoeuvre your pram on and off public transport? Depending on your preferred mode of travel, you might have different requirements – will you need a pram that can wheel easily onto a bus and then fold easily once you’re seated? A compact pram or stroller might be a good investment for you.
  • Will you be driving places often with your pram? You’ll want to think about your vehicle boot space, the ease of use of the pram, the weight and bulk of the pram, and your own patience for setting up and folding away your pram.
  • Will you want to jog with your baby? If you will want to use your pram as a jogger once your baby is old enough and strong enough, then you’ll likely want a 3-wheel option that has a lockable front wheel and great suspension.

There are also some other pram features to think about as you browse options:

  • Basket size – different prams have different basket sizes, rated to different weights. People use their pram basket for all sorts of things such as their nappy bag, pram rain cover, or even the occasional bag of groceries.
  • Accessories or additions – there are heaps of add-ons designed to make your pram the ultimate ride for your little one. While they are tiny, you won’t need too much, but you might find certain additions handy such as a parent caddy/pram organiser where you can place your phone, keys or water bottle. As your bub gets bigger, you might want to consider additional accessories like a snack tray.
  • Seating options – if you’re having multiples or hope to grow the family in years to come, then you might want to proactively consider a double pram. If you’re content with a single pram for now, then consider the seating options – does the seat recline fully? Can it face forwards or backwards? Can you change the height of the seat? There’s no single “best” option for seating, but it’s handy to think about before you choose your new pram.
  • Sunshade – in sun-safety conscious countries like Australia and New Zealand, having a protective sunshade is a non-negotiable feature for some parents. Prams typically come with a sunshade as standard, as do most strollers, so look at how far they extend down to protect your baby from the sun.

How easy is the pram to use?

Ease of use is often the difference between loving your pram or cursing it every time you need to head out. Does it have one-hand folding, or is it an extensive process to disassemble it for each car trip? Can you steer it one-handed while carrying a coffee, or does it require two hands to wrangle it through shop aisles? Does it come apart easily for cleaning, or is it a puzzle to put back together afterwards?

Choosing a pram that ticks the right boxes for your family and lifestyle will ensure you love your pram for years to come, which is important as it’s often a large investment for new parents or caregivers.
